AppleCare for iMac Pro priced at $169

It’ll be 169 clams for AppleCare+ coverage for your new iMac Pro.

Apple has announced that AppleCare+, which extends your iMac Pro’s warranty from one to three years, will retail for $169. This is cheaper than the AppleCare+ policy for an iPhone X and also reduces the cost of some repairs. If you have a Mac notebook and the display fails, for example, AppleCare+ more than pays for itself.

By comparison, you’ll pay $129 for an iPhone 8, $149 for an iPhone 8 Plus, and $199 for an iPhone X. For a 15-inch MacBook Pro you’ll pay a whopping $379—more than double the cost of AppleCare+ for the iMac Pro.

So, not too terrible for an extended warranty and hopefully this comes in handy.

Apple launches iMac Pro, 8-core, 10-core, 14-core...

The all-powerful iMac Pro you’ve been hankering for is now available.

Apple has announced that its 8-core and 10-core iMac Pro models start at $4,999 and $5,799 respectively and currently ship by late December in the United States, while 14-core and 18-core models starting at $6,599 and $7,399 can also be ordered today, but aren’t estimated to ship for 6-8 weeks, which pushes deliveries into February.

Each iMac Pro configuration has optional upgrades for storage, memory, and graphics, the ultimate, maxed-out, high-end 18-core unit with 4TB of SSD, 128GB of ECC RAM and an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor with 16GB of HBM2 memory retailing for $13,199.

Apple said the iMac Pro is the fastest and most powerful Mac ever, at least until the modular Mac Pro is ready to be released.

The high-end performance is made possible by an all-new thermal design that delivers up to 80 percent more cooling capacity than a traditional iMac.

The iMac...

First Impressions of the New iMac Pro

Apple held a small press event yesterday in New York City to officially unveil the new iMac Pros, which went on sale today.

It is significantly more expensive than its non-pro iMac siblings — the iMac Pro starts at $4999, but most configurations will cost significantly more. But make no mistake — if you buy one of these, you’re getting true professional performance for your money. You’re not just getting (admittedly gorgeous) space black anodized aluminum.

The entire lineup of iMac Pros is based on Intel’s new Xeon W CPUs, and is entirely SSD based. There are no configurations with spinning hard drives or Fusion drives — according to Apple, the system architecture is designed only to work with SSDs for internal storage. These components are all high-end: the RAM is 2666 MHz DDR 4 ECC; the SSD storage has...

Apple’s podcast analytics service is now in beta

At WWDC this year, Apple announced it would soon offer its own podcast analytics service for show creators who publish on Apple Podcasts. Today, that service has launched into beta, offering podcasters the ability to track unique devices and playback metrics for their podcasts, including when listeners drop off in the middle of a show.

This is great news. It only tracks iOS 11 on mobile devices, but people move to the latest iOS pretty quick on Apple devices, so that shouldn’t be much of a drawback.

Review: JBL LSR305 5” Two-Way Powered Studio Monitor

We have reviewed several of JBL's speakers and headphones over the years. Many have touted the "JBL House Sound," but we've never really talked about what that means. Though JBL's current product line includes some interesting consumer lifestyle products, the company's history is in pro audio — chances are that the last movie theater or concert venue you visited used JBL speakers or, at least, many of the songs in your library were mixed using JBL speakers. One of the most important products in JBL's pro audio lineup, the entry-level LSR305, has become more than just a studio monitor — it's become a go-to recommendation for new audiophiles looking for their first set of high-quality speakers. We think they've earned their reputation as one of the best value-for-dollar speakers available.{/exp:char_limit}

A new patent filing involve long-distance swimming...

Two newly filed patent applications by Apple show that the tech giant is looking into more ways to beef up the fitness and health features of the Apple Watch.

Patent number 20170357007 is for “radionavigation for swimmers.” Methods, systems and computer program products for radionavigation (shouldn’t that be two words) for swimmers are described. It’s designed for long-distance swimming in open waters.

The Apple Watch can be configured to estimate a location using radio frequency signals can estimate a position of the swimmer when the mobile device is worn on a limb of the swimmer and periodically submerged. The smartwatch can supply auxiliary information to a radionavigation subsystem to correct a navigation solution affected by limb motion of the swimmer and affected by the periodic submersion of the Apple Watch.

Patent number 20170358242 is for “managing presentation of fitness achievements” and is targeted mainly at runners...

Hands-on: Final Cut Pro 10.4 adds 360 VR, advanced...

Today is a big day for creative professionals in the Apple ecosystem. Not only does it mark the launch of the new iMac Pro, a powerful all-in-one beast specifically built with professional creatives in mind, but it also marks the launch of the next major version of Final Cut Pro X.

Although this latest Final Cut Pro X update brings it to version 10.4, don’t be fooled into thinking it contains only minor features or bug fixes. On the contrary, Final Cut Pro 10.4 contains several new major features and/or enhancements, along with a slew of other additions, making this one of the biggest releases in the app’s six-and-a-half year history.

After visiting with Apple in New York for a demonstration of the update, we’ve been testing Final Cut Pro 10.4...

Apple’s Advanced Manufacturing Fund isn’t limited to...

In discussing Apple’s $390 million investment in Finisar, a manufacturer of optical communications components, Apple Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams told CNBC that the $1 billion allotted for the Advanced Manufacturing Fund is "absolutely not" a final threshold.

"We're not thinking in terms of a fund limit," Williams said. We're thinking about, where are the opportunities across the U.S. to help nurture companies that are making the advanced technology — and the advanced manufacturing that goes with that — that quite frankly is essential to our innovation."

The Advanced Manufacturing Fund comes from Apple's U.S. investment pool. Corning, Inc., was the...

iMac Pro first look: Apple’s most powerful Mac is a...

The long-awaited iMac Pro is finally here. On Thursday, December 14, Apple’s new workstation-class Mac became available on the company’s website. The 8- and 10-core iMac Pro ships immediately, while the 14- and 18-core models ship in January.

The release of the iMac Pro is significant for Apple. The Mac Pro, released in 2013, has had only one minor update in four years, and Apple earlier this year admitted that the machine is a mistake. And while the company could say that a top-of-the-line iMac has plenty of processing power, it’s not the workstation-level computer that demanding professionals want. This machine is a sign that Apple still values pro users and wants to offer a Mac that can meet their demands. During an iMac Pro media event (attended by Macworld), company...

8 and 10-core iMac Pros to ship this week, 14 and 18...

There’s a timeline for the release of the iMac Pro you might be hankering for.

The iMac Pro’s 8 and 10-core models will be available this week while the high-end 18-core iMac Pro will ship early next year, alongside an unannounced 14-core model that will apparently be added to the lineup for a total of four Intel Xeon processor configurations.

The iMac Pro can also be configured with up to 4TB of SSD storage, up to 128GB of ECC RAM, and up to an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor with 16GB of HBM2 memory.

Pricing for the iMac Pro starts at $4,999 with the computer becoming available on December 14th in the United States, Canada, UK, and several other countries. Apple has yet to announce exact price points on a...
