AltStore PAL Alternative App Marketplace Launches On iPhone In EU AltStore PAL has become one of the first alternative app marketplaces to launch in the European Union. Developed by Riley Testut, AltStore PAL is marketed as an open-source project designed to distribute apps from independent developers. MacRumors reports: At launch, it features two apps, including Testut's Delta game emulator and clipboard manager app Clip. Delta is also being simultaneously released in the App Store outside of the European Union, but it looks like EU customers will need to download it from AltStore. Testut says that once AltStore PAL is "running smoothly," third-party app developers will be able to submit their apps for distribution outside of the App Store. The app marketplace is designed to be decentralized with no directory, so developers will need to self-promote their apps and direct users to their websites to install an app through AltStore.
Distributing apps through AltStore is free of charge, but it is worth noting that apps that see more than one million first annual installs will need to pay Apple an 0.50 euro Core Technology Fee. App marketplaces have to pay the fee for every install with no free allowance, so AltStore is charged 0.50 euros each time it is installed. To afford the fee, Testut is charging 1.50 euros per year for AltStore PAL access. Testut has been working on AltStore PAL since Apple announced plans to support alternative app marketplaces in iOS 17.4. It is open to all apps, but Testut says that it makes the most sense for "smaller, indie apps that otherwise couldn't exist due to App Store rules." AltStore PAL is equipped with Patreon integration to allow developers to monetize their apps. Developers can offer their apps to just their patrons, and this method of distribution also allows for a sub-1 million cap on those who can subscribe to use an app.

iPhone 17 Plus Rumored to Feature Smaller Screen Than iPhone 15 Plus While the iPhone 16 series is still months away from launching, another rumor has already surfaced about the two-generations-away iPhone 17 lineup.
In a post shared today on social media platform X, oft-accurate display industry expert Ross Young said he heard that the "iPhone 17 Plus" will be equipped with a smaller screen than the current-generation iPhone 15 Plus, which has a 6.7-inch display. However, he did not reveal the exact screen size planned for the iPhone 17 Plus.
Currently, the iPhone 15 Plus has the same screen size as the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If this rumor is accurate, a smaller screen would further differentiate the Plus model from the Pro Max model, starting with the iPhone 17 lineup.
Meanwhile, it has been rumored that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays, which would be a 0.2-inch increase over each of the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max.
A summary of what to expect follows, but given the iPhone 17 lineup is still a year and a half away, keep in mind that details could change.

Hands-On With the New App Store Delta Game Emulator A decade ago, developer Riley Testut released the GBA4iOS emulator for iOS, and since it was against the rules at the time, Apple put a stop to downloads. Emulators have been a violation of the App Store rules for years, but that changed on April 5 when Apple suddenly reversed course and said that it was allowing retro game emulators on the App Store.
Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.
With official support available for emulators, Testut this morning released his latest emulator, Delta, on the App Store. Unlike the other two emulators that have been released in the last week, Delta is incredibly polished and provides an all-around pleasant gameplay experience.
Delta supports game systems that include the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS. Skins for the different systems load automatically depending on what's being played, and the app does an excellent job making you feel like you're playing on a retro Nintendo device.
It is worth noting that Delta is such a great emulator because it is not, in fact, new. It has been able to be installed on iPhone using alternate installation means, but the App Store is a much more streamlined way to get it. Delta is the must have emulator, at least for NES content.
Delta's on-screen controls work flawlessly for games, but it is also compatible with a wide range of retro and modern game controllers. It supports save and load states, and content can be synced between devices. There are also advanced features like support for Game Genie and GameShark cheat codes, a hold button, and fast forward for speeding through slow parts of games.
When you import a game, Delta automatically detects the appropriate box art, and there is support for 3D Touch and app icon shortcuts for accessing recent and favorite games.
There are no games included with Delta when you install it, but it can open zipped files that are uploaded to iCloud Drive, Dropbox, or Google Drive. Apple's App Store rules permit "retro game console emulator apps" and Apple says that developers are required to ensure that their software complies with "all applicable laws."
If you haven't downloaded Delta already, it's well worth going to pick it up. We're not expecting Delta to get pulled from the App Store, but there's always the possibility that Nintendo could protest now that it's more widely available, so download it sooner rather than later. This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

What to Know About Apple Allowing Game Emulators in the App Store Apple updated its App Review Guidelines this month to allow "retro game console emulator apps" on the App Store for the iPhone and iPad. Below, we outline everything to know about these emulators and available options so far.
This information is up to date as of April 2024, but Apple's policies could change over time.
What is Allowed
Apple told us that emulators that can load games (ROMs) are permitted on the App Store, so long as the apps are emulating "retro console games" only.
Apple would not tell us which consoles it classifies as retro, but developer Riley Testut's popular emulator Delta is now available on the App Store, and it can emulate games for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Nintendo 64, and Nintendo DS.
There is also a Commodore 64 emulator on the App Store called Emu64 XL.
We have not come across any other fully-functioning emulators on the App Store released after the rule change, but more will likely be available in the future. Apple recently removed an emulator called iGBA from the App Store for ripping off Testut's code for Delta and its predecessor GBA4iOS, while the developer of NES emulator Bimmy decided to remove the app from the App Store to avoid the risk of legal action from Nintendo.
Legality
While a U.S. court ruled that emulators are legal, downloading copyrighted ROMs is typically against the law in the country. On its customer support website in the U.S., Nintendo says that downloading pirated copies of its games is illegal:Pirate copies of game files are often referred to as "ROMs".
The uploading and downloading of pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal.Nintendo recently sued the developers of Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu for "facilitating piracy at a colossal scale," leading to a reported $2.4 million settlement. Nintendo has yet to comment on the availability of emulators in the App Store, but Delta and its predecessor GBA4iOS have been available on the iPhone outside of the App Store for over a decade now without being shut down. Nintendo did issue a DMCA takedown notice against the GBA4iOS website in 2014, but the emulators have continued to remain available.
For those who want to abide by the letter of the law, it is generally legal to download and play "homebrew" games available in the public domain.Tags: App Store, EmulatorThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Seeds Second Public Beta of macOS 14.5 Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming macOS Sonoma 14.5 update to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to test the software ahead of its launch. The public beta comes two weeks after Apple released the first public beta.
Beta testers can opt-in through the Software Update section of the System Settings app. Under Beta updates, simply toggle on the Sonoma Public Beta. Note that you must sign up to participate on Apple's beta testing website.
There have been no new features found in the macOS Sonoma 14.5 developer betas so far, and Apple listed no additions in its release notes. It is likely that the update focuses on bug fixes and other small under-the-hood improvements. Apple Releases Second Public Beta of iOS 17.5 Apple today seeded the second betas of upcoming iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 updates to public beta testers, allowing non-developers to test the software ahead of its release. The second public iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 betas come two weeks after Apple released the first betas for public beta testers.
Public beta testers can get the beta by opening up the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the "Beta Updates" option, and toggling on the iOS 17 or iPadOS 17 Public Beta. Signing up on Apple's beta testing website is required.
iOS 17.5 is limited on new outward-facing features, focusing primarily on changes in the European Union. App developers in the EU are now able to add their iPhone apps to their website, so that users can download them directly without having to use the App Store.
To offer an app for download from a website in the European Union, developers need to meet specific criteria. Developers need to be a member of the Apple Developer Program for two continuous years or more and must have an app with more than one million first installs on iOS in the European Union in the prior year. Other requirements include submitting to Apple's notarization process and publishing transparent data collection policies.
This feature is limited to the European Union due to the Digital Markets Act and is not available to all users.
iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 also have updates to mobile device management and there are code changes suggesting Battery Health functionality could come to the new iPads and that Apple will soon add alerts for third-party item trackers.Related Roundups: iOS 17, iPadOS 17Related Forums: iOS 17, iPadOS 17This article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Delta Game Emulator Now Available on iPhone Game emulator apps have come and gone since Apple announced App Store support for them on April 5, but now popular game emulator Delta from developer Riley Testut is available for download.
Testut is known as the developer behind GBA4iOS, an open-source emulator that was available on the App Store for a brief time more than a decade ago. GBA4iOS led to Delta, an emulator that has been available outside of the App Store, but is now sanctioned by Apple.
Delta is an all-in-one emulator that supports game systems including NES, SNES, N64, Nintendo DS, Game Boy, and Game Boy Advance. It works with popular game controllers, and supports cheats, save states, backups, syncing, and more. As this is Testut's longtime project, it is more polished and feature rich than other emulators that have popped up.
Other features include custom controller skins, an option to fast forward, a "hold" button for games where a button needs to be consistently held, support for Haptic Touch, and appropriate box art for imported games. Local multiplayer gaming is available, and up to four players can participate.
Earlier this week, Apple approved iGBA, a direct copy of Testut's original GBA4iOS app. iGBA made it to the top of the App Store charges, but Apple pulled it after learning that it was a knockoff.
Delta can be downloaded from the App Store for free, and it does not collect information or include ads. The app is available in the United States and other countries, but it is not available in the European Union where it is instead being offered through an alternative app marketplace. Apple Notes to support voice memos, mathematical notation in iOS 18 Macworld
The Notes app in iOS and iPadOS 18 could be in for a couple of big new features, according to a report by AppleInsider. iOS 18 is expected to be revealed at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, which holds its keynote on June 10.
Sources have told AppleInsider that Apple plans to introduce the ability to record, save, and play voice memos into Notes, and the recordings are embedded within the Notes entry. Users can make further notations, either written or with images, within the entry. This could be handy for, say, students attending a lecture, or while participating in a work presentation or meeting.
The user interface for voice memos will resemble that of the iOS Voice Memos app. Voice memos will also be included in iCloud syncs across devices, so they’ll be accessible within macOS 15–macOS 15 is specifically called out, which likely means you need to upgrade for voice memos to properly sync. However, the report doesn’t state how many of these new features will be introduced at the same time as iOS 18; Apple sometimes introduces new iOS features first and then brings them to macOS at a later time.
The other new feature is called “Math Notes,” which AppleInsider says is “support for displaying proper mathematic notation.” It could integrate with the iOS Calculator app, but the feature is still a work in progress.
The two new features are efforts by Apple to better compete with Microsoft OneNote, a popular notes app and part of the Office365 suite. One distinct advantage OneNote has is its ability to sync between Windows, Mac, and iPhone/iPad through OneDrive. Apple Notes doesn’t have a Windows app, though Notes can be accessed on the web through iCloud.com.
The report, however, doesn’t state how much functionality of the new features will be available in Notes on iCloud.com. It would seem that the voice recording feature would not be available, but playback could be. With Math Notes, it’s not known if the Calculator tie-in would be accessible.

iOS 18 Rumor: Notes App to Offer New Voice Memos and Math Features iOS 18 will add a few new features to the Notes app related to voice memos and mathematics, according to information obtained by AppleInsider.
First, the report claims that iOS 18 will allow iPhone users to record voice memos directly within the Notes app, and these recordings could then be embedded in notes. Audio recordings can already be copy and pasted from the Voice Memos app into the Notes app for playback, but this step would no longer be necessary starting with iOS 18.
Second, the report claims that the Notes app will likely gain support for displaying mathematical notation on iOS 18, meaning that users would be able to add more types of mathematical equations to notes. This feature will allegedly have some kind of integration with the Calculator app, but the exact implementation is unclear.
The report also says macOS 15 will feature a redesigned Calculator app.

LastPass was one of the pioneers of password managers, helping popularize the idea and show what a useful tool they can be for convenience and safety. Now, with so many quality alternatives available, how has the grandmaster stood the test of time?
LastPass was a trailblazer and still has a legion of faithful users across the world. It’s not had an easy time over the past few years though, with high-profile data breaches, alongside the rise of several competitors that have set the standard for a modern-style password manager. So, how does the current version stand up to its impressive legacy?
For alternatives to 1Password take a look at our roundup of the Best password managers.
Software & Features
Auto-fill login details
Store passwords, payment details and credentials
Syncs across different devices
If you’ve never used a password manager before, then it can be something of a revelation. The principle is simple: you create a complex master password and then LastPass will remember all of the others that log you into accounts and online sites. When you get prompted for a login, a LastPass box will open up and auto-fill the details so you can quickly gain access to your account. Easy and very convenient.
Getting set up is a little bit fiddly if you want to import your existing passwords from your browser password manager (say Chrome) or a rival app, although LastPass does provide detailed instructions for the process, so it’s reasonably quick to move everything across safely.

Once in LastPass, the interface is clean and simple, with the Vault page being home to all your passwords, which you can look at and edit individually. This space is also where you can store additional information, such as payment details so that checkouts are auto-filled when you want to make a purchase, addresses, secure notes, plus important documents like a passport or driving licence. If you have a family member who wants the Netflix password, you can share this securely from LastPass without having to copy and paste it into a text message for the 1,000th time.
If you want to up the randomness of your passwords, rather than sticking with combinations of birthdays and pet names, then the built-in generator allows you to create complex replacements that have various options – length, upper/lower case letters, symbols and numbers that would satisfy the demands of all sites and apps that can require different things.
There’s also a security dashboard that shows how decent your current level of online safety is, along with suggestions on how to improve. It’s all standard fare for a password manager, although it lacks some of the customization options laid out by rivals such as 1Password.
While LastPass does support biometrics (Touch ID and Face ID) for logging into the app, a big omission in the current version (at the time of writing) is support for Passkeys. These are the hot new thing in online security and although LastPass does say support is coming soon, you’ll already find this capability in Dashlane and 1Password.
Security and Encryption
AES 256-bit encryption
Dark Web monitoring
2-Factor Authentication
LastPass employs 256-bit AES end-to-end encryption to keep your passwords safe while being used to unlock your accounts. Again, this is pretty standard, as is the 2-factor authentication feature for an extra layer of protection to your data.
Martyn Casserly
Martyn Casserly
Martyn Casserly
Dark web monitoring is there to let you know whether any of your details have been exposed in data breaches. Sadly, this is necessary, as LastPass has been the victim of a few attacks in recent years that have made the headlines. As you’ll see in our is it safe to use LastPass? article, the company has reported several hacks in the past decade, which does call into question the security of the company.
While you might argue that such public embarrassment might leave the engineers laser-focused on keeping up the digital drawbridge, the real problem is that LastPass isn’t the only game in town, so why would you choose one with a checkered history over others that have been rock solid?
Price and Availability
There are three tiers on the consumer side of LastPass – Free, Premium, and Families. The Free tier gives you most of the features on the service, albeit only on one type of device (mobile or desktop). For syncing across these platforms and 1GB of secure storage for other documents, you’ll need to sign up to Premium for $36/£31.99 p/a. If you need multiple accounts, then you can get six on the Families plan for $48/£40.80 p/a.
LastPass is available on macOS, iOS/iPadOS, Android, and browser extensions for Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and Opera.
Should you buy LastPass?
LastPass is a solid and reliable password manager that will serve many people well. That being said, it lacks some of the more advanced features you’ll find on rivals, and the security problems over the last few years does make it harder to recommend.

Apple Considers Expanding Manufacturing Base to Indonesia Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company is "looking at" potential manufacturing opportunities in Indonesia following his recent meeting with the country's president.
Tim Cook with Indonesian ministers (photo: AP Photo)
During the meeting with Joko Widodo, Cook highlighted the mutual interest in boosting local manufacturing to support Indonesia's economic growth. "We talked about the president's desire to see manufacturing in the country, and it's something that we will look out," Cook later told reporters.
Indonesia has been actively seeking to attract foreign manufacturing to power its economic development, with the Widodo administration pushing to become a new hub for international business. This offers new openings for Apple as it pursues its strategy to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing, which is mainly operated by its assembly partner Foxconn.
Apple seeks to diversify its supply chain in the face of geopolitical tensions, economic slowdown, and other risks such as production disruptions caused by China's COVID lockdowns. With production shifts already opened in Vietnam and India, Apple is exploring further expansion in Southeast Asia.
"I think the investment ability in Indonesia is endless. There are many great places to invest, and we're investing. We believe in the country," Cook added.
The meeting came shortly after Cook's visit to Vietnam, where he met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. In Hanoi, Cook outlined plans to deepen Apple's investment and increase expenditures with local suppliers, reinforcing the company's commitment to enhancing its presence in the region.Tag: IndonesiaThis article, "" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Apple Boosts Efforts in Renewable Energy and Water Sustainability Apple is intensifying its global investment in clean energy and water sustainability, advancing towards its "Apple 2030" goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by the decade's end, the company has announced.
"Clean energy and water are foundational to healthy communities and essential building blocks for a responsible business," said Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives. The initiatives support Apple's operational and manufacturing needs as well as cater to the electricity used by customers to power their devices.
Apple has also set a target to replenish 100% of the freshwater used in its corporate operations in high-stress areas. Apple addresses predictive emoji ‘bug’ in latest iOS 17.5 beta after outrage Macworld
If you weren’t on X/Twitter over the weekend, you missed out on the latest iPhone outrage. As first spotted by British television presenter Rachel Riley, when the word “Jerusalem” was typed using the stock keyboard, one of the suggested emojis was the Palestinian flag, which Riley and others saw as a deliberate provocation.
In her post, Riley asked Apple to “explain whether this is an intentional act by your company, or whether you have no control over rogue programmers.” Both Israel and Palestine claim Jerusalem as their capital, though neither claim is officially recognized globally. She noted that dozens of other cities don’t offer country flags as suggested emojis.
Apple quickly responded by declaring the emoji was the result of an iOS 17.4.1 bug that affected predictive text. It’s unclear what caused the bug or if other words were affected as well, but Apple has fixed it in the latest iOS 17.5 beta. According to @aaronp613 on X, Apple has stopped the word “Jerusalem” from showing any suggested emoji in iOS 17.5.
That doesn’t quite sound like Apple fixed a bug, but it does take care of the issue. By removing the emoji suggestion entirely, it avoids any appearance of controversy.
After Riley’s discovery, other suggested emoji “blunders” went viral, including a hut when typing the word Africa. However, as many people pointed out, the emoji is called “African hut,” so the predictive text algorithm is likely picking up the name.
iOS 17.5 is in the second round of beta testing and will likely launch in late April or early May.

Dashlane has been a stalwart password manager for several years now, with plenty of advanced features and security protocols to keep your passwords safe and always available. But, there’s more to it than just logging into your accounts, as you’ll see below.
Software & Features
Auto-fill passwords
Secure vaults for private data
Password generation tool
Dashlane is easy to get to grips with when you first launch the app. The Home page shows your most frequently used passwords, alongside quick access to your logins, secure notes, payment methods, personal info and IDs. There’s also a row of icons at the bottom of the page that you can use to navigate to your notifications (messages from Dashlane about your account), the password generator, tools, and settings.
It’s all clear and easy to understand, which makes interacting with the app a breeze. There’s plenty to dig into as well. Each of the password and login details you create or import from your previous password manager have their own page. Here, you can copy the password to enter into a login field on a website, check its strength, and be warned if it’s been involved in a security breach.
Should the latter have occurred, switching to the password generator page will quickly enable you to create new, secure replacements that you can use to make your account safe once more. The generator has various options that allow you to choose how complex the password will be. These include the length and whether it will contain digits, letters, symbols or characters that look similar to others. Using these settings you should be able to satisfy any combination required by a site.

Of course, you’ll still need to go to the site and change the password, as it can’t be done from inside Dashlane, but each entry has a link to the site, which makes it quick to update to the new password.
It’s not only your account details that you can store in Dashlane though, there’s also bank details to make it simple to pay for things online, your address for deliveries, not to mention important documents like your passport, driving licence and other similar items. This means you’ve always got a record of your information on you, while still having it protected via encryption and the secure login of the Dashlane app.
Armed with this information, Dashlane can auto-fill fields on sites, meaning you can log in, order and pay for items, then have them delivered to the correct address by barely having to type anything at all. There’s also support for Passkeys on the app, which will increase convenience and safety in the future as more sites adopt the technology.
I did encounter a few websites and apps where the Dashlane log-in box didn’t appear, and therefore had to refresh the page or try logging in a second time to get it to come up, but this was rare and could have something to do with interference from the site itself. For the most part, Dashlane was reliable and fast so I could access sites with a minimum of fuss.

As with pretty much all password managers these days, Dashlane operates with a high level of emphasis on security. All your transactions between the app and sites are end-to-end encrypted using 256-bit AES technology. This prevents hackers from being able to gain access to your information while you’re logging on.

There’s also 2-factor authentication available, with the Dashlane app acting as an authenticator, plus password monitoring to check if any of your details have been exposed in data breaches or have been reused too many times. To add even more layers of protection, the premium accounts come with a built-in VPN to encrypt all of your online activities, plus there’s dark web monitoring which scans for any of your credentials being traded on the criminal side of the internet.
Price and Availability
Dashlane is available on a wide range of platforms, with dedicated apps for iOS/iPadOS and Android, plus extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox.
At the time of writing, Dashlane costs $39.96 (approx £32) per year for the individual account, which is a little bit more than some of its rivals, but the family and friends package blows most out of the water with 10 accounts included for the annual fee of $59.88 (approx £47). You’ll also find various tiers for small business and enterprise users.
There is a free tier available, which acts as a taster for the full package, and you can use it indefinitely but with a limit of only 25 passwords. Still, if you don’t use that many sites, it might actually be enough by itself.
Should I buy Dashlane?
There’s no surprise that Dashlane is usually found around the top spots of the password manager charts. It’s a fully fleshed out app with advanced tools and security features. While the individual account might cost slightly more than some of its closest rivals, the family plan offers outstanding value for money. If you’re looking for a password manager for your extended family or friendship group, Dashlane is an excellent choice.

Dashlane has been a stalwart password manager for several years now, with plenty of advanced features and security protocols to keep your passwords safe and always available. But, there’s more to it than just logging into your accounts, as you’ll see below.
For alternatives to 1Password take a look at our roundup of the Best password managers for Mac.
