Apple Seeds First Beta of iOS 11.2.5 to Developers

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming iOS 11 update to developers, just over one week after releasing iOS 11.2, the second major iOS 11 update, and just a few hours after releasing iOS 11.2.1.

Registered developers can download the iOS 11.2.5 beta from Apple's Developer Center or over-the-air once the proper configuration profile has been installed from the Developer Center.

It's not clear what new features will be included in the iOS 11.2.5 beta, but as a minor 11.x.x update, it is likely to focus primarily on bug fixes and security improvements rather than major outward-facing changes. It's not clear why Apple has skipped several numbers to release an 11.2.5 beta.

We are still waiting on two major iOS 11 features that have yet to be introduced, though. iCloud Messages and...

T-Mobile Announces Internet TV Service Coming in 2018

T-Mobile today announced that it will launch its own over-the-top TV service in 2018, which will be fueled in part through the acquisition of Layer3 TV. Details about the service are scarce, but T-Mobile CEO John Legere said that it will continue the company's theme of being a "disruptive" solution to its rivals, this time in both the internet TV and paid cable markets.

Layer3 TV will help T-Mobile build the service, which is said to provide solutions to lengthy contracts, increasing monthly bill costs, confusing bundles, outdated user interfaces, and more. T-Mobile will fold in Layer3 TV's current services and expand it to a wider audience. Right now this includes select TV channels, streaming online video content, and social media, but is only available in five U.S. cities.

Apple hasn't released sales figures for the iPhone X, iPhone 8, or the iPhone 8 Plus, but a new chart shows the most expensive of the three is also the most popular.

Data from analytics firm Mixpanel — as noted by Business Insider — shows that iPhone X adoption outpaced that of its less pricey cousins in late November. iPhone X adoption currently stands at 4.76%, ahead of the iPhone 8 Plus at 3.59% and the iPhone 8 at 2.78%.

Mixpanel's data doesn't show sales figures, but measures people picking up the new iPhones and using apps that are integrated with Mixpanel's software development kit. Collectively, it looks like the three devices are selling well and on track to overtake iPhone 7 Plus adoption over the next few months, according to Business Insider.

Hurricane Irma, iPhone 8, and iPhone X were three of the world's most popular search terms on Google this year, according to the company.

While the results make it look like the iPhone 8 is more popular than the iPhone X, it's important to consider that Apple's flagship smartphone was more commonly referred to as the iPhone 8 in rumors until a leaked version of iOS 11 essentially confirmed its stealthier name back in August.

In the consumer tech category, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X were the highest trending search terms in 2017, ahead of the Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8, and Xbox One X in the top five globally. In the United States in particular, the iPhone 8 Plus was the sixth-most trending search term.

Apple patent is for generating a 3D model using an...

As shown by the newly granted patent 9,842,429 Apple wants your iPhone and iPad to be able to generate a 3D model based on recordings made with the device.

Per the patent your iOS gadget can can load and provide an initial display of a 3D model. As you move the iPhone, motion sensing components can detect the device movement and adjust the displayed portion of the 3D model to reflect the movement of the smartphone

By walking with the device in the user's real environment, a user can virtually navigate a representation of a 3D environment. You could record an object or environment using your iPhone, and tag the recorded images or video with movement information describing the movement of the device during the recording.

The recorded information can then be processed with the movement information to generate a 3D model of the recorded environment or object. According to the patent, such models could enable, among other things, 3D representations of photos or...

Apple to Invest $390 Million in Finisar, US Maker of...

Apple announced on Wednesday its plans to invest $390 million in Finisar Corp, which supplies components for the vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) found in the iPhone X True Depth camera.

The investment will be used to build a plant in Texas to make more of the chips, and will be financed by Apple's $1 billion Advanced Manufacturing Fund, which the company created earlier this year to foster innovation and create jobs in the U.S.

"VCSELs power some of the most sophisticated technology we've ever developed and we're thrilled to partner with Finisar over the next several years to push the boundaries of VCSEL technology and the applications they enable," said Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer. Enlarge / Apple Watch Series 2. (credit: Valentina Palladino)

While the Apple Watch is seen by many as the ultimate wearable fitness tool, it's somewhat out of place in the gym. The native Workout app has a number of exercise profiles to choose from, including activities that can only be done in the gym. But, in many ways, the Watch is best suited for outdoor activities.

But with the introduction of GymKit, Apple hopes to make the in-gym cardio experience better. Apple's system to connect the Apple Watch to compatible gym equipment started rolling out across the globe earlier this fall, and it just hit the US this week. Below is everything you need to know about GymKit as an Apple Watch user, how you can use it, and what it means for your workouts in the future....

iMac Pro to incorporate T2 chip to handle discrete...

The upcoming iMac Pro will feature new security hardware in the form of a new custom chip dubbed the T2, serving as a secure enclave for encrypted keys, giving users the ability to lock down their Mac’s boot process and also handling system functions like the camera, audio control, and managing the solid-state hard drive.

Details about the new T2 chip were revealed by Caleb Sasser, cofounder of Panic.

Per Sasser, the T2 chip combines previously discrete functions, such as the system management controller, image signal processor for FaceTime camera, audio control, and SSD control.

Like the MacBook Pro’s T1 chip, the T2 chip features a secure enclave for data such as passwords. Sasser also noted that the hardware featured an encryption engine:

“This new chip means storage encryption keys pass from the secure enclave to the hardware encryption engine in-chip — your key never leaves the chip. And, they it allows for hardware verification of OS, kernel,...

Though Ortelius is emphatically not a GIS, it does have limited support for importing shapefiles (refer to documentation for best results; re-projection is not supported). Powerful and extensive text features give you a fine degree of control over labelling. Create your own styles and symbols or use any of the many hundreds built-in. Layers and layer groups keep your work organized.

Apple’s AiPort firmware puts the whack on KRACK

Apple has updated its updated its existing AirPort devices with firmware updates that patches vulnerabilities to KRACK attacks that allow a malicious hacker to bypass WPA2 encryption on Wi-Fi networks and make a user's data easy to view.

KRACK (Key Reinstallation AttaCK) can expose information shared on Wi-Fi networks, even over connections “secured” with data encryption and passwords. The vulnerability breaks WPA 2, the strongest and most common form of encryption used to protect data on home and business Wi-Fi networks.

Both firmware versions can be downloaded and installed via Apple's AirPort Utility on Macs or iOS devices. Version 7.7.9 is for 802.11ac hardware; the 7.6.9 version is available for 802.11n devices.

Apple patent allows your media and gaming...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,839,851) for “allowing media and gaming environments to effectively interact and/or affect each other.” Basically, it allows games on an Apple device — Mac, iPhone, or iPad —  to use and share data from your music and photo libraries.

Per the patent, a gaming environment can be affected based on one or more aspects of a media environment. For example, gaming content and/or the gaming experience provided and/or suggested to an individual can be tailored based on his/her musical profile effectively obtained from the media environment associated with the individual.

Similarly, a media environment can be affected by a gaming environment. By way of example, musical content provided and/or suggested to an individual can be based on his/her gaming profile.

Caleb Sasser, the co-founder of Panic, which makes macOS and iOS apps, has tweeted that the iMac Pro features some new Apple custom silicon: the T2 chip, which makes it the most secure Mac desktop ever.

Fishball 360: An inexpensive way to shoot 360°...

Although I'm not a fan of crowdfunding projects right now (I've got well over $700 invested in two campaigns that may never ship...), I saw one today that caught my attention because it's inexpensive and it has to do with my fascination with 360° spherical VR photography and videography. It has the fun name "Fishball 360" and it's at 107 percent of its funding goal on Indiegogo with 11 days to go.

Unlike many of the VR cameras out there, the Fishball 360 requires no charging, no memory cards, no pairing and no firmware updates. The Fishball 360 clips onto the iPhone 7/7 Plus, 8/8 Plus or iPhone X, and then uses a proprietary system of fisheye lenses and mirrors to create a 360° capture. A free app then lets the user film photos and videos as usual...but with the ability to view them with a VR headset (not included) later.

Review: Shinola Canfield On-Ear Headphones

Writing reviews of consumer electronics can get a bit predictable. Cellphones, TVs, and even headphones from established manufacturers will receive iterative updates and only occasionally manifest as something truly new. Occasionally a lifestyle brand puts their name on a headphone, but you can always tell when their involvement doesn't go any deeper than the logo. Sometimes, however, a company can surprise us. Recently, Detroit-based Shinola — a watch and leather goods manufacturer named after a shoe polish company — released a series of headphones. We got a chance to try their Canfield On-Ear; they're quite good. {/exp:char_limit}

Phil Schiller Says iPad Pro Can Both Supplement and...

Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller believes the iPad Pro can be both a PC replacement and a supplementary device to the Mac.

In a wide-ranging interview with T3 about the iPad Pro and other Apple products, including the iPhone X, iMac Pro, HomePod, and AirPods, Schiller said the iPad Pro's exact use case ultimately varies by customer. What we've learned, truthfully, is that it's both, and that depends on the user. For some people, iPad Pro is a replacement for their computer. Not that you throw away your computer. People don't often do that.Schiller added that, for many customers, the iPad Pro becomes their primary computing device, especially while traveling. But that it becomes your primary computing device. The way you mostly hear about this is people say, 'I use a computer at my desk' or 'I use a notebook at my desk, but when I travel, I travel just with my iPad Pro'. It is so great in that...

iMac Pro Available With 8 or 10 Cores This Week, 14...

Apple today announced that the iMac Pro will be released this Thursday, December 14, but YouTube reviewer Marques Brownlee says only 8-core and 10-core models will be available to order this week.

Brownlee in his hands-on video said the high-end 18-core iMac Pro will ship early next year, alongside an unannounced 14-core model that will apparently be added to the lineup for a total of four Intel Xeon processor configurations.

Skip to the 1:53 mark of the video

The 10-core iMac Pro clocked at 3.0GHz earned a multi-core score of just over 37,400 on Geekbench, which is up to 93 percent faster than the latest 27-inch 5K iMac and up to 45 percent faster than the high-end 2013 Mac Pro.

Ortelius is a full-featured vector drawing application especially for map design. Draw directly with features such as roads, rivers, coastlines, buildings, symbols and contours. Ortelius is known for its unique "connectable tracks" and expert stacked styles that make drawing tedious map features easy. Every object supports attribute data that can be referenced by text labels, and everything can be directly drawn and positioned simply by dragging and dropping. Layers and layer groups keep your work organized.

iMac Pro Described as Blazingly Fast, Quiet, and...

Marques Brownlee and Jonathan Morrison have shared hands-on videos of the iMac Pro, which Apple said is available to order on December 14.

Image: Jonathan Morrison

Brownlee spent the past week with the iMac Pro, using it to create his hands-on video itself with Final Cut Pro X, and found it to be a super capable yet quiet machine with a beautiful display and a stealthy space gray enclosure.

He said the iMac Pro's biggest weakness is its lack of upgradeability, but he said its expensive $4,999 starting price is actually fair for the hardware included, and he priced out a PC with mostly equivalent tech specs at $5,100.

Brownlee benchmarked the 10-core iMac Pro on Geekbench and recorded a multi-core score of 37,417, which is up to 45 percent...

∞ VIDEO: The new iMac Pro, hands on impressions

[VIDEO] Marques Brownlee has had the new iMac Pro for about a week. In the video embedded in the main Loop post, he shows it off, shares his first impressions.

If you are in the market, this is absolutely worth your time.

Couple of notes here:

  • Important to note that the new iMac Pro is not user upgradable. So if you are ordering, future proof best you can.

  • Marques priced out a home built PC using the iMac Pro parts (or similarly specced parts where the actual parts are not yet available) and came up with a price of $5100. Comparing that to the iMac Pro base price of $4999, my take is that the iMac Pro is fairly priced.

  • The fact that I cannot upgrade over time is an issue for me, though I suspect iFixit will eventually sell a kit to get me inside and 3rd parties will sell parts to upgrade. Eventually.

  • The iMac Pro is very quiet, runs cool. That’s impressive, given the high end workstation grade...

A pen clip for your Apple Pencil

Patrick Lucas Austin, LifeHacker:

There’s a pretty straightforward reason you should attach a clip to your Apple Pencil: it lets you treat it like a traditional writing implement. The Apple Pencil’s completely rounded design means it is more prone to roll around your desk, or right off your table and onto the ground. In addition, adding a clip lets you, of course, clip it anywhere you’d stick a regular pen.

Tips for Successful Email Marketing Campaigns

My latest Inc.com post, on running successful email marketing campaigns, is available at https://www.inc.com/charles-edge/10-email-marketing-campaign-tips-to-keep-subscribers-attract-new-ones.html. It starts like this:

It seems like every time I turn on the radio, there’s an ad for an email marketing automation tool. Constant Contact, Mailchimp, Emma, iContact and even Salesforce make it pretty easy for small and mid-size businesses to automate beautiful emails. Or for larger organizations, there are offerings like Marketo, Adobe Marketing Cloud and Eloqua.

But while the ads make it sound like these campaigns write themselves, they don’t.

Email marketing is a delicate business. On one hand, you don’t want to be an evil spammer. On the other, email is an efficient way to stay in touch with potential and existing customers.

You’ll soon be able to watch almost all NFL games...

Brian Fung, Washington Post:

The news was announced Monday by Verizon as it sealed a deal with the NFL for an estimated $2 billion over the next five years. The move highlights the telecom giant’s pivot toward digital media and online advertising amid massive changes in the TV and Internet industries.

Monday’s deal makes it possible for Verizon to hook customers of even rival Internet providers with must-see content hosted on websites that Verizon owns — such as AOL, Yahoo, Yahoo Sports and go90, the telecom giant’s proprietary online video app.

The agreement between Verizon and the NFL will let football fans stream their local teams’ games, as well as nationally televised games and league highlights. Games that air on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays are covered under the deal. Even the Super Bowl will be widely streamed to anyone with an Internet connection, Verizon said.

Even if you have no interest in the NFL, this is an important move. Verizon has...

Apple’s Phil Schiller on how the iPhone X “seemed...

From the T3 interview with Phil Schiller, starting with the creation of iPhone X:

“At the time, at the beginning, it seemed almost impossible. Not just almost. It seemed impossible. And to pull off what feels impossible and make it possible – and not only that, but just something we love using – is just a great achievement.

“Clearly there was a point in the process where we had to commit to the fact that it would be a full top-to-bottom screen on the front with no home button, which means you’re counting on Face ID working as we’d hope, and being as good.

“That’s an exciting moment, when you have to sort of… the old saying: ‘Burn the boats. Leave the past behind, and commit.’ Knowing that the team was willing to make that gamble was a key point early enough in the process..

And:

“Most people are comfortable with it within minutes – 30 minutes, whatever. It’s not the kind of thing you have to live with for a week or two to get used to.

Why Apple’s acquisition of Shazam is so important

Michael Simon, Macworld:

Shazam’s main strength is music identification, and that fits well into Apple’s current strategy. It’s not just Siri on our phones: AirPods, HomePod, and Apple Watch could benefit from Shazam’s uncanny ability to name that tune.

And:

On the new Pixel phones, Google has implemented a feature that displays the name of a song playing nearby even if Assistant hasn’t been asked. It’s a neat feature that’s all done locally, and I use far more often than I thought I would. A similar feature would be great on the iPhone, and with Shazam’s massive library at Apple’s disposal it would be far superior to Google’s.

And:

We will already be able to ask Siri to play things like the most popular song in 1986, but Shazam could amplify its knowledge considerably. It would be great to tap your AirPods and ask “Play the song that goes like this …” or “Play that Ed Sheeran song about Ireland.” Shazam might not be able to do that now, but the...

Apple's Alleged Throttling of Older iPhones...

An anonymous reader shares a report: A Reddit post over the weekend has drawn a flurry of interest after an iPhone 6s owner reported that a battery replacement significantly increased the device's performance running iOS 11. The ensuing discussion thread, also picked up by readers in the MacRumors forum, has led to speculation that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to retain a full day's charge if the battery has degraded over time. According to TeckFire, the author of the original Reddit post, their iPhone had been very slow after updating to iOS 11, especially compared to their brother's iPhone 6 Plus, so they decided to do some research with GeekBench and battery life apps, and ended up replacing the battery.

No, Apple won't end music downloads on the...

Once again, Digital Music News, quoting the always popular "unnamed sources," claims Apple will quit selling music at the iTunes Store by 2019 and push users to go with streaming only via, of course, Apple Music. According to the Sellers Research Group (that's me), this is totally not true.

The reasoning is that streaming music is on the rise (Apple Music reportedly has 30 million subscribers with that number growing), while song downloads are on the decline (an estimated -25% or -30% last year). Also, according to Digital Music, folks are confused and don’t understand the difference between Apple Music, iTunes, iTunes Match, iTunes Cloud, etc.

However, iTunes music downloads will still be worth an estimated $600 million in...

Apple challenges a patent held by Native American...

Apple filed a petition at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board on Friday challenging the validity of an electrical circuitry patent held by a company with ties to a trio of Native American tribes, setting up the possibility for a defense based on the tribes' sovereign rights, reports Law360.

In September MEC Resources, which is wholly owned by a Native American tribe, sued Apple, saying the iPad violated its patent (number 6,137,390) for “inductors with minimized EMI effect and the method of manufacturing the same.” MEC Resources is owned by the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribe. You can now pre-order iOS 11 apps up to 90 days...

Apple’s App Store has a new feature that allows developers to make new iOS 11 apps available for pre-order up to 90 days before release.

Developers can now track the performance of app pre-orders in Sales and Trends. Sales and Trends displays the number of ordered, canceled, and net pre-orders (net represents ordered minus canceled). Once a pre-order is released for download to the customer, it's reflected as a unit. For paid apps, upon successful billing, downloads are released and the associated sales from the pre-order appear.

Before an app is released, users can view the app's product page and order the app in advance. Once it’s released, users will be notified and the app will automatically download to their iPhone or iPad. You'll be charged before downloading for paid apps.

Apple and Chicago team up to bring coding...

Apple announced that it’s working with the city of Chicago to bring coding opportunities to Chicago’s nearly 500,000 students through a citywide expansion of Apple’s Everyone Can Code program.

Chicago-area teachers use Apple’s Everyone Can Code tools and curriculum to bring coding to life for students.

The initiative in Chicago was designed in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools, City Colleges of Chicago, local businesses and non-profit organizations. Together, Apple and local organizations are helping expand opportunities for students to build the skills they need to pursue careers in the app economy by becoming proficient in Swift, Apple’s programming language. Described as safe, fast, and expressive, Swift appeals to developers who are aiming to build on Apple’s multiple platforms, such as iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS.

Starting this spring, Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago will expand Everyone Can Code...

Reusing your old computer is better than recycling

By Jeff Graber

We all know that it is preferable to reduce, reuse, and recycle when it comes to keeping trash out of landfills. However, you may not have known that it is much more preferable to repurpose or reuse your old materials as opposed to even recycling. This is especially true when it comes to electronics, like cell phones or old computers. In this article, we will compare reuse versus recycling. We will also look at how to reuse or repurpose your old computer.

Recycle versus reuse

Before you just decide to recycle your Mac, wait. To properly recycle your Mac, you will probably have to take it to a special recycling center. You may even be charged. Macs and other electronics are not like plastics or glass: they can’t just be easily recycled. Due to lots of mixed materials and parts, they have to be disposed of properly. Recycling also takes energy and time to process all the materials. Instead, consider reuse of your...

GymKit surfaces in Manhattan following launches in...

This could lead to something nifty.

Apple’s GymKit platform seems to have made its first debut in the United States. After initially surfacing in Australia and London, GymKit was seen as Life Time Athletic at Sky, a “luxury health club” in Manhattan. GymKit is also expected to be incorporated at the Equinox line of clubs beginning in 2018. Life Time Athletic says it plans to expand to over 130 locations soon and is currently using equipment from TechnoGym.

The GymKit platform pairs an Apple Watch with workout equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes. Once paired, the user has access to more accurate information such as speed and incline.

The setup process is described as follows:

GymKit works with a simple tap-to-pair process: Tapping a ready piece of equipment starts the process, and the Apple Watch brings up a confirmation screen.

With treadmills, it asks if you want to record a walk or a run. From there, everything on...

It’s now a bit more likely that the iPhone X you ordered will ship in as few as one to three days in some locations.

Apple’s website has U.S. orders for all iPhone X models attached to AT&T, Sprint and Verizon networks, as well as SIM-free versions, deliver in 3 to 5 days, a marked improvement over recent ship-by estimates. Shipments of T-Mobile iPhone X units are pegged at nine days.
